Brand Story
Doris, the founder of Hindora Living, was born into a very traditional Hong Kong family.
With parents who hoped their daughter would succeed, she followed the expected path—attending a traditional girls’ school, studying hard, progressing through the education system, and eventually finding a stable job. Her life trajectory seemed to have been written long before she could question it.
Yet, at the end of her high school career, something began to feel off about this so-called “standard answer.”
Part of her longed to step outside the predefined framework, considering paths such as culinary school or nursing school. At the same time, reality pulled her back, leaving her caught in between. All she knew then was that she felt unhappy—but she could not explain why.
Her parents, unfamiliar with emotional and psychiatric medication, brought her to a family doctor. Without a meaningful conversation, the doctor diagnosed her with a “mood disorder,” speaking of it lightly, as if it were as ordinary as a cold—or like wearing glasses, merely an aid.
And so, she began taking that small pill for emotional imbalance.
After graduating from university, she worked in administrative and research roles at universities and social service organizations. Life appeared to be moving steadily forward. It was a time when her career was rising, and she was also preparing for marriage and pregnancy—the prime years of life.
Yet quietly, that small pill was also bringing changes within her body.
Several years later, when her family doctor attempted to taper the medication without proper planning, she experienced severe withdrawal symptoms. During the tapering process, she consulted many Western doctors, underwent thorough examinations, and repeatedly heard the same words: “There’s nothing we can do,” “It can’t be treated.”
In the end, she had no choice but to resign from her job and retreat into a quieter, rural life.
Without work or direction, she fell into a deep low point in life.
Fortunately, she met a practitioner of Chinese medicine who became a friend. During the period when she was not working, she began helping out as an assistant at the Chinese medicine clinic. Days passed slowly, time flowed gently, and before she realized it, many years had gone by.
Later on, she nearly exhausted her savings to enroll in an expensive professional aromatherapy program. It was during this time that she officially became a certified aromatherapist.
Sometime after that, she met her first true spiritual companion. Together, they embarked on a journey that was “partly understood, yet full of the unknown”—exploring energy healing, meditation, and many small but gentle mind-body-spirit tools. These experiences gradually opened the door to her path of self-healing.
Looking back, through her years working in universities, social service organizations, and later in private practice, she accumulated extensive experience walking alongside others. She has accompanied people through different stages of life, helping them rediscover their own rhythm and their own way back to healing.
This little shop is not meant to replace medical care.
Rather, it hopes to offer a space—
a place to slow down, to breathe,
perhaps beginning with a single breath, a trace of aroma, or a moment of being truly understood.
And that small pill for emotional imbalance—
in the end, it did not define her.
Instead, it led her here.
